Kenyan coffees are some of the most vocal when it comes to origin. These AA beans (The largest of the standard Kenyan coffee bean size classifications) are grown at exceptionally high altitudes so their high density is what needs to be kept in mind. We push heat heartily to first crack and try to maintain a steadily declining rate of rise following the endothermic spike after first crack.
Over the past few years, many growers in Kenya have left the industry - low prices and late payments being the main cause of discouraged growers. (In spite of the high prices paid for Kenyan coffees, most of this has historically not reached the producers.) Alongside this exodus, there have been quality concerns - those distinctive blackcurrant notes not nearly as prevalent as before in top end Kenyans.
Committed to tackling these issues, our sourcing partners have once again been working with the Ndaro-ini washing station.
They have pledged to buy their entire crop each year, at a significant premium making them the best-paid growers in Kenya as well as guaranteeing payment in advance - critical in enabling farmers to fertilise timeously for the following season.
